2-HOUR NEUROMUSCULAR EVALUATION AND HANDS ON ASSESSMENT

1. Health History Review
We begin by reviewing your health and dental history to identify patterns contributing to TMJ symptoms.
• Previous dental work or orthodontics
• Jaw trauma, clenching, or grinding
• Jaw pain, headaches, or neck tension
• Sleep quality and breathing patterns
• Oral habits like mouth breathing or gum chewing

2. TMJ Function Assessment
We evaluate how your jaw joint moves and functions. This helps identify movement patterns that may be contributing to symptoms.
• Jaw opening and closing
• Side-to-side movement
• Forward movement of the jaw
• Any clicking, restriction, or deviation

3. Neuromuscular Pattern Evaluation
Many TMJ issues are influenced by muscle habits and
coordination patterns.
• Low or forward tongue posture
• Open-mouth resting posture
• Overactive neck and facial muscles
• Tension patterns affecting jaw movement

4. Range of Motion & Muscle Assessment
We identify trigger points, tight muscles, and imbalances.
• Comfortable and maximum mouth opening
• Side-to-side movement
• Muscle palpation of the head neck and face
• Intraoral muscle assessment

5. Fascial System Considerations
The fascial system connects the jaw, head, and neck. Restrictions in this system can influence:
• Posture
• Muscle tension
• Jaw mobility
• Movement coordination

6. Personalized Treatment Plan
At the end of the session we review what we found and the next steps.  Your plan will include:
• Neuromuscular coordination exercises
• Breathing and posture strategies
• Habit awareness and correction
• Manual therapy to reduce muscle tension
We also review recommended treatment options and cost.

7. Collaborative Care
TMJ conditions often benefit from a team approach. When appropriate, referrals may be made to providers such as:
• Dentists
• Oral Surgeons
• Orthodontists
• ENTs
• Physical Therapists
• Chiropractors
• Sleep Doctors

8. What This Appointment Helps Determine
Your evaluation helps identify:
• If muscular dysfunction is contributing to your pain
• How your jaw is functioning
• The most effective treatment approach moving forward

NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY FOR TMJ AND JAW PAIN
Every client’s journey is unique, and therapy is customized based on how your body responds. Rather than following a rigid plan, we take a progressive approach, meeting your body where it’s at and building week by week toward long-term relief and improved function. An added advantage is that everything can be done virtually, making it accessible from anywhere. Here’s an overview of what we focus on as we move through therapy.

1. Building the Foundation
We begin with gentle, hands-on techniques like self-massage and posture retraining to reduce muscle tension and bring awareness to how your jaw is functioning. You’ll learn key concepts such as proper tongue posture, nasal breathing, and how to recognize clenching or bracing patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.

2. Repatterning & Control
Once a solid foundation is in place, we introduce targeted exercises to retrain the muscles of the jaw, tongue, and face. These movements help restore balance, improve jaw mobility, and increase strength where it’s needed. You’ll also learn how to release deeper structures like the floor of the mouth and under the chin, along with strategies for addressing habits like nail biting, mouth breathing, or grinding.

3. Integrating the Whole Body
We expand the focus to include postural alignment and how your neck, shoulders, and chest impact jaw tension. This stage often includes advanced coordination drills involving chewing, swallowing, and speaking, as well as support for better ergonomics during daily activities like working at a desk, driving or sleeping.

4. Long-Term Support & Maintenance
As you begin to feel more ease and control, we’ll fine-tune your home routine and create a personalized self-care plan to keep your progress going. You’ll leave with tools to manage stress-related tension, reduce flare-ups, and support your jaw health long term. When appropriate, we may also discuss referrals to other specialists to complement your care.

*As a licensed massage therapist, I’m able to complete myofunctional therapy training programs to expand my understanding of the muscles and functions related to the tongue, jaw, breathing, and oral posture. These courses are incredibly valuable for deepening my knowledge and improving the way I support clients with TMJ dysfunction and related concerns. However, certification in myofunctional therapy is currently limited to licensed medical and dental professionals such as speech-language pathologists, registered dental hygienists, and certain other healthcare providers. This restriction is based on scope of practice laws and professional licensure requirements, not on the content of the training itself. That said, I fully apply the principles and techniques I’ve learned like nasal breathing, tongue posture, and oral habit awareness within my scope of practice as a neuromuscular massage therapist. My work focuses on helping clients restore function and reduce pain through hands-on therapy, movement re-education, and customized home care all informed by a strong foundation in myofunctional concepts.
